About Drawings by a Pencil Artist

About Me – My Journey as a Pencil Portrait Artist

I’m Mike Bruce, a Birmingham-born pencil portrait artist with a lifelong passion for drawing. From an early age, I was drawn to art, spending countless hours sketching and refining my skills. That passion led me to study art at college, where I built a strong technical foundation and discovered my natural ability for capturing detail and realism.

While my formal training gave me the fundamentals, through dedication, practice, and a commitment to continuous improvement, I’ve developed my own distinctive style as a largely self-taught artist beyond college, one that blends photorealism with warmth, character, and emotional depth.

My Approach to Portrait Drawing

Every portrait I create is a labour of love. I specialise in producing highly detailed pencil drawings from photographs, carefully studying each image to capture not just a likeness, but the personality, mood, and unique essence of the subject.

Using high-quality ivory black artist pencils, I build up layers of tone and texture to achieve deep contrast, fine detail, and a lifelike finish. My goal is to transform it into something meaningful, a piece of art that preserves a moment, a connection, or a cherished memory.

Whether I’m drawing a loved one, a beloved pet, or a special moment, I approach every commission with the same level of care, precision, and respect for the subject.

A Personal and Professional Service

I believe that commissioning a portrait should be an enjoyable and personal experience. I work closely with each client, ensuring your vision is understood and brought to life exactly as you imagine it. From your first message to the final delivery, my focus is on quality, communication, and your complete satisfaction.

I will supply the portraits unframed as standard, giving you the freedom to choose how you display your artwork. However, I also offer a professional framing service if you prefer a ready-to-hang piece. I will protect each portrait by spraying it with a gloss varnish and carefully packaging it to ensure it arrives safely.

Creating Meaningful Artwork

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of creating portraits for clients across the UK and around the world. Many of my customers tell me how much their artwork means to them, whether it’s a tribute to a beloved pet, a gift for a family member, or a way to preserve a special moment in time.

A pencil portrait is more than just a drawing; it’s a lasting, personal keepsake. That’s why I put my heart and soul into every piece I create.

Commissioning Your Portrait

My lead time typically ranges from one to eight weeks, depending on the size, subject, and time of year, with Christmas being especially busy. If you’re planning a portrait as a gift, I always recommend ordering well in advance.

If you’re ready to transform your favourite photograph into a beautiful, hand-drawn piece of art, I’d love to work with you. Send me your image, and I’ll guide you through the process from start to finish.
